«Diane, today, at 11:29am, my investigation of the David Lynch enigma is beginning with these first clues, ” the voice of Stéphane Ghez announces in the red room of Twin Peaks.
Agent Cooper’s tape-recorder, a photo of Henry Spencer from Eraserhead, and a blue rose are some of the clues. Like a good investigation file, Ghez’s film is full of curious facts and important accounts: among his interviewees are Lynch’s biographers, colleagues, friends, and family including his ex-wives—artist Peggy Reavey and film editor Mary Sweeney—, the great producer Dino de Laurentis, who collaborated with Lynch on Dune, and the filmmakers’ favorite actors. The viewer will find out why the making of Lynch’s debut film took five years and how the milkshake he used to get in his favorite café is connected to his obsession with detail. Isabella Rossellini talks about why Blue Velvet should not be interpreted in a Freudian way, and Laura Dern shares her understanding of Inland Empire. The film also has some Easter eggs for Lynch’s fans, including an interview with Kyle McLaghlan in a very Twin-Peaks restaurant over a «damn good cup of coffee.» Ghez’s investigation will inspire you to discover or rediscover Lynch’s work and was made with a lot of love: at the Cannes premiere in 2025, the film was introduced by Lynch’s son Riley.
