This indie horror set in a Japanese convenience store premiered and won a FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin Film Festival in 2026.
Sakai (Shota Sometani), an assistant manager at fictional convenience store AnyMart, is surrounded by a traditional cast of characters: an oddball colleague, a short-spoken owner who watches employees on security cameras, and rude customers. Sakai’s life starts to change with the appearance of a confident newly-hired girl, Ogawa (Erika Karata), and a series of suicides at the store.
The debut feature by Yusuke Iwasaki, who gained acclaim within Japan with his work in advertising in the late 2010s, AnyMart builds on the themes of isolation and indifference within Japanese society that he explored in his 2024 short Void.
The world of the convenience store, which can be interpreted as a model of Japanese society, is unfriendly: staff meet the customers’ rudeness with false optimism amidst an atmosphere of social and economic decline. Mao Ohkawara’s cinematography creates a sense of absurdity and the eerie soundtrack of quiet ambient music and static electricity holds the tension until the bloodbath ending.
The film will be screened in Japanese with Russian subtitles.
