Krzysztof Kieślowski’s philosophical and psychological drama was selected as the Polish entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards in 1989.
Tomek (Olaf Lubaszenko) is in love with Magda (Grażyna Szapolowska), who lives in the apartment opposite his. He goes out of his way to cross paths with her: delivers fake postal notices to make her come to the post office where he works; becomes a milkman to deliver milk to her door. One day, he professes his love for her, which leads to a sequence of shocking events.
The film was originally shot as an episode of the television miniseries The Decalogue, which revisited the ten Christian commandments in the context of Poland in the 1980s. The sixth episode of the series, looking into the commandment “Thou shalt not commit adultery, ” explored love, attraction, and sex. Through a provocative storyline and complex psychological portraits of its characters, Kieślowski discusses philosophical questions about the nature of attraction, social taboos, and mutual understanding.
The film will be screened in Polish with Russian subtitles.
