DESCRIPTION

Garage Museum of Contemporary Art will hold a discussion dedicated to alternative means of communication used by people with intellectual disabilities.

Marking World Autism Awareness Day, on April 2, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art will run a conversation dedicated to alternative means of communication available for people with intellectual disabilities. The speakers will discuss the main existent programs developed for alternative communication, such as Makaton and PECS. The discussion will feature practicing experts in the field of pedagogics.

Makaton is a linguistic program that uses symbols, gestures, and speech for communication with people with intellectual disabilities.

PECS is communication system based on the exchange of images.

Ekaterina Lebedeva, pedagogue, project coordinator at the Osoboe Detstvo (Special Childhood) Center for Curative Pedagogics.


Anna Boeva, clinical psychologist, ABA therapist.


Anastasia Sigunova, psychologist, specialist in abdominal decompression, ANCO Center Prostranstvo Obscheniya (Space for Communication).

The discussion is accessible for deaf and hard of hearing visitors and will be translated into Russian Sign Language.
