DESCRIPTION

The speakers will discuss the specifics of selecting, storing, exhibiting, and using video in a museum context.

How is an archival video collection formed? How is it stored and catalogued? What is the fundamental difference between an archive and a collection? Andrei Kachalyan, Head of Garage Media Archive, director Yulia Ovchinnikova, artist Kirill Gluschenko, and curator Elmira Minkina will try to answer these questions and will discuss the nuances of working with video as both an archival material and an object of artistic research.

PARTICIPANTS

  • Kirill Glushchenko

    An artist. He graduated from the Institute of Contemporary Art (Moscow) and the Photography Department of the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. He is a winner of the Innovation Prize in the nomination New Generation (2017).
  • Andrei Kachalyan

    А head of Garage Media Archive, a video artist and documentary filmmaker, and lecturer at Moscow’s Rodchenko Art School.
  • Yulia Ovchinnikova

    An art historian, cinematographer, director, and founder of Art via Video studio. She graduated from Moscow State University (1992). Since 1994, she has been documenting Moscow’s art scene and creating programs and films about artists. Her chronicle of exhibitions and actions (1994–2010) was the first video series acquired by Garage Archive Collection. Since 2020, she has been a researcher at Moscow Museum of Modern Art’s Mediatheque.
