DESCRIPTION

Direct animation is a free experimental technique allowing for vivid and unexpected results.

AS part of the Big Cartoon Festival program, Garage is launching a direct animation studio where participants can create cartoons without camera and computer. This technique is based on free drawing on film stock making it accessible for everyone.

Animation without camera initially used film where new plots were scratched upon the old ones. To animate a character, their movements are divided into separate phases and drawn on film stock. In each frame the character’s movement slightly differs from that of the previous and following ones.

Taking this technique as their basis, the studio curators have simplified it a little, allowing children to draw using regular pencils, marker pens, and paints.

The workshop’s resulting project will be a cartoon that will be available for viewing on the Big Cartoon Festival website.
