I’m a Designer: Turning a Book into a House

Every book contains an entire world—a world created by its designer.  What can it look like? Can it look like a house? During this workshop marking the publication of the book Thumbelina by Hans Christian Andersen and artist Alexey Buldakov, participants will make book-houses with the book’s designer, Maria Subbotina. The story contains descriptions of various animals’ homes, but Thumbelina has never had a house. Using collage and drawing, we will design a house for Thumbelina, an animal, and ourselves, while learning how books are made.

About the teacher

Maria Subbotina is an artist, book designer, and facilitator at Atelier at GES-2 House of Culture. Her work explores the form and potential of the book as a medium.

The Path of a Book: Meeting with an Editor from Samokat Publishing and Making a Picture Book

How is a book made? What path does is travel from the original idea to the shelf in a bookshop? A book is made by a team of many people, working together like a well-oiled machine. During the meeting with an editor from Samokat Publishing, we will take a closer look at this machine. What are its parts? Who are editors and what do they do? How do they choose what the book will be about? What is the author’s role in its making and what happens to the text after it has been written? How do illustrations influence our experience of a story and what do designers and proofreaders do? We will organize a publishing team and collaborate on the making of a book, starting from the idea and finishing with the cover.
