Artist talk: Yerbossyn Meldibekov

DESCRIPTION

Yerbossyn Meldibekov will give a public talk at the opening of his installation Transformer.

Artist Yerbossyn Meldibekov and project curator Andrey Misiano will present the new Garage Square Commission, talk about Central Asian national identities and the messages behind state symbols and monuments, and discuss the key ideas and values that have inspired Transformer.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Yerbossyn Meldibekov (b. 1964, Tulkubas, Kazakhstan) graduated in Monumental Sculpture from Almaty Theatre and Art Institute in 1992. He has had solo exhibitions at Soros Contemporary Art Center (Almaty, 2007), Kunstverein Rosenheim (Germany, 2008), Pärnu Linnagalerii (Estonia, 2012) and Kasteyev State Museum of Arts (Almaty, 2015). Selected group exhibition include: Off the Silk Road: No Mad’s Land (Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, 2002), Privatisierungen (KW Institute for Contemporary Art Berlin, 2004), Time of the Storytellers (Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki), Progressive Nostalgia (Centro per l'arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci, Prato, Italy, 2007), Grammar of Freedom/Five Lessons (Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow, 2015) and Signature Art Prize 2018 (Singapore Art Museum, 2018). He took part in the 51st and 54th Venice Biennales (Central Asia Pavilion, 2005, 2011), the 9th Gwangju Biennale (South Korea, 2012) and the 7th Asia Pacific Triennial (Brisbane, Australia, 2012). He lives and works in Almaty.
