DESCRIPTION

Taryn Simon will give a public talk to mark the opening of her solo exhibition Action Research / The Stagecraft of Power.

The talk will be begin with a dialogue with Kate Fowle, Chief Curator of Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, focusing on the two series in the exhibition: Paperwork and the Will of Capital and Black Square.  In celebration of Simon’s two-year collaboration with ROSATOM to create her latest Black Square work. The artist will then speak with Sergei Novikov, Director of Communications at ROSATOM Corporation on issues of international cooperation in the field of atomic energy.

ABOUT THE PARTICIPANTS

 

Taryn Simon was born in 1975 in New York, USA, where she lives and works. Recent exhibitions include: Taryn Simon: Rear Views, A Star-forming Nebula, and the Office of Foreign Propaganda, Jeu de Paume, Paris (2015); A Polite Fiction, Louis Vuitton Foundation, Paris (2014); There Are Some Who Are in Darkness, Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany (2013); A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters I–XVIII, Museum of Modern Art, New York (2012); A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters, Tate Modern, London and Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (2011).

Simon was a Guggenheim fellow in 2001. Her works have been acquired for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tate Modern, Whitney Museum of American Art, Centre Pompidou, and Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. She participated in the 54th (2011) and 56th (2015) Venice biennales.


 

Kate Fowle is Chief Curator of Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow and Director-at-Large at Independent Curators International (ICI) in New York, where she was Executive Director from 2009 to 2013. Prior to this, she was the inaugural International Curator at Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing. From 2002 to 2007, Fowle was chair of the Master’s Program in Curatorial Practice at California College of the Arts in San Francisco, which she co-founded in 2001. Before moving to the USA, she was Co-Director of Smith + Fowle in London (1996–2001) and curator at the Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne (1993–1996). She graduated with a Fine Art degree from Norwich School of Art and was awarded the Arts Council of England Traineeship in Curating in 1991.


 

Sergei Novikov is the director of Communications at ROSATOM Corporation.
