Film Screening. The Nose, or the Conspiracy of Mavericks

Master of Russian animation, Andrei Khrzhanovsky has turned the innovative opera by Dmitri Shostakovich—based on the eponymous novella by Nikolai Gogol and effectively banned in the Soviet Union—into a surrealist dream made of drawn animation, music, and documentary footage. The magical and heart-wrenching picture takes the viewer on a journey to the world of the Russian Avant-Garde, whose history resonates with the modern day. Director Andrey Khrzhanovsky will introduce the special screening at Garage Screen summer cinema and will facilitate an audience discussion.

Film premiere and Q&A: In Deep Sleep

A sailor working on a ship somewhere in the Russian North is on trial for allegedly murdering a colleague. Turning to his memories, which are indistinguishable from visions, he tries to reconstruct what happened and clarify reality, which is twisted like a fishing net. Maria Ignatenko’s lyrical and utterly cinematic debut was first screened in the Forum program of the 70th Berlin International Film Festival. The Moscow premiere at Garage Screen will be introduced and discussed with the audience by the director.

Film premiere and Q&A: Conference

Seventeen years after the terrorist attack at Dubrovka Theater, one of the victims decides to organize a memorial evening in the building where the hostage-taking took place. With surgical detachment, the new drama by Ivan I. Tverdovsky (Zoology, Correction Class) reveals untapped historical trauma, collective amnesia, and a survivor's tragedy. The Moscow premiere of the film at Garage Screen will be introduced and discussed with the audience by the director.
