This episode presents a reassessment of consumer culture, not as society’s greatest vice, but as the key to studying its history, as well as a source of artistic inspiration. Conceptual artist Mel Chin breathes new life into things deemed useless or dysfunctional, like polluted land or burnt houses. Andrea Zittel creates universally applicable objects designed to change our lives for the better – from multi-functional furniture sets to an actual island-home for living and travelling in. African-American artist Michael Ray Charles works with issues and objects belonging to the past and related to the exploitation of black stereotypes. In his films and games, video artist Matthew Barney subverts everyday reality by playfully allocating social roles and emphasizing the cult of consumerism and the capitalist lifestyle in general.
