Sasha Obukhova: The Year of 2000

In this lecture of the cycle, Obukhova reviews the major tendencies of the eventful decade, including the increased integration of politics into art; the development of art galleries and art criticism; the introduction of art institutions offering novel methods of education; and the decline of large-scale curatorial projects. 2000 was marked by serious shifts in the Russian art scene: the first significant sales; the creation of large collections; the introduction of ArtChronika magazine; and the revival of Art Moscow fair. It was the year in which the long-awaited art market finally arrived.

Sasha Obukhova (born 1967) is an art historian and member of the Kandinsky Award expert board. She has worked at Moscow Contemporary Art Institute, Tretyakov Gallery, and State Center for Contemporary Art. Since 2012 she has been acting as the head of the Garage research department.

Entrance to all education events is free.
