LECTURE CYCLE: 1990s YEAR BY YEAR

Sasha Obukhova: The Year of 1991
This second lecture contemplates the formation of a new artistic system replacing the old Soviet culture-management structure. Around 1991, a variety of novel exhibition spaces emerged, including commercial galleries, the non-commercial Center for Contemporary Art, and diverse experimental venues where artists took on the role of curator. This period was marked by the first steps in the development of a local art market, exemplified by the establishment of the ART MYTH international art fair. At the same time, a string of large-scale exhibitions was organized in Moscow by Russian art historians, including Joseph Backstein, Viktor Misiano, Ekaterina Degot, Andrey Erofeev, and others.
Admission is free.
