Cornelius Cardew's The Great Learning (c. 1971)

Part three will present the work of English composer Cornelius Cardew. The successor of Hugo Wolf and Morton Feldman and assistant to both Stockhausen and John Cage, Cardew was a participant in the renowned AMM experimental music group. His work The Great Learning (c. 1971), never before performed in Russia, is based on the texts of Confucius, Lenin and Mao, and was originally performed by The Scratch Orchestra - an orchestra of non-professional musicians assembled by Cardew in the late 1960s. The concert series at Garage will present two of The Great Learning's seven ‘paragraphs'.
