Perestroika Art
Sasha Obukhova
Sasha Obukhova will talk about how the famous Sotheby's auction in 1988 influenced Moscow unofficial art. Then the auction house held the first auction of nonconformist art in the Hammer Center in Moscow. This event became the high point of Russian contemporary art. Many artists, who had been unknown to public, set price records which still seem incredible. Thus, The Fundamental Lexicon of Grisha Bruskin was sold for $416,000. It was the era of perestroika when an open internal art market of unofficial art started to form as first private galleries were opened in Moscow.
