1920s: Paris street fashion in the age of changes. A lecture by Olga Mikhailovskaya

Date

Schedule

19:00–20:00

Place

Garage Lounge Zone at UNIQLO Atrium

DESCRIPTION

As part of Garage Museum of Contemporary Art’s partner partner program with the UNIQLO brand, fashion journalist, stylist, and fashion historian Olga Mikhailovskaya will acquaint the audience with the unique Parisian street styles of the 1920s.

The lecture coincides with the UNIQLO collaboration with Ines de la Fressange. On the same day, the collection, inspired by the fashion of the twenties in Montmartre, will be available in UNIQLO stores.

Influenced by 1920s sport and dance euphoria, as well as the new vision of the world, casual outfits went through a series of radical transformations throughout the post-World War I decade. Looking for more comfortable and practical outfits, fashion designers significantly renewed the silhouettes, promoted knitted garments, berets, and androgynous looks.

The lecturer will also explain how the search for new ideas instigated couturiers to collaborate with artists; what kind of experimentations in the field of clothing were informed or inspired by surrealism, futurism, and the Art Deco style; what role the “Russian Seasons” and constructivism have played in the history of Parisian fashion, and many other things.
