DESCRIPTION

The course offers an introduction to the history and basic concepts of architecture, and puts its evolution in a historical and social context, explaining how architecture has been affected by new social demands, advances in technology and the discovery of new materials.

How do we “dissect” a building? How do architects organize traffic in entire cities? How and why did skyscrapers come about? How has architecture served the state and the church? What kind of buildings do architects design for themselves? What is so special about the Shukhov tower, and why is it so admired in the East?

Each class will be complete with a practical assignment encouraging participants to develop their own project: design a building of the future, assemble a Shukhov tower model, or write an architect’s manifesto.

ABOUT THE COURSE INSTRUCTOR

Anastasia Golovina

Anastasia Golovina is an architect, teacher, and artist. Golovina graduated from the Moscow Architectural Institute in 2002 and has worked as an architect at the Central Research and Restoration Project Workshop. In 2008–2009 Golovina was a faculty member at the Moscow Institute of Architecture’s School of Architectural Development. Golovina’s artworks and architectural projects are available at www.noarov.ru/golovina.

Vladimir Yuzbashev

Vladimir Yuzbashev is an architect and a lecturer. Yuzbashev completed a Master’s program at the Moscow Architectural Institute in 2004, and has worked as a lecturer at its Department of Contemporary World Architecture, as well as at the British Higher School of Art and Design and the Moscow School of Architecture (MARCH). In 2004 he co-founded AK Reflection, an initiative under the Union of Moscow Architects that has organized a number of international exhibitions, workshops and actions exploring the latest developments in Moscow and international architecture. He is also the founder and chief architect at the Vladimir Yuzbashev studio established in 2009. Vladimir Yuzbashev is a recipient of the Red Dot Design Award and the Perspektiva Award, as well as the winner of the design competition for a hotel in Strastnoy Blvd (First Prize).
