Группа «Синий суп» была создана в 1996 году в Москве выпускниками МАРХИ — Алексеем Добровым, Даниилом Лебедевым и Валерием Патконеном (с 2010 года с группой не работает), а в 2002 году к ним присоединился Александр Лобанов. Художники используют цифровые технологии и язык компьютерной анимации как основной художественный инструмент. Echelon

The group Factory of Found Clothes (FFC) founded by Natalia Pershina‑Yakimanskaya (Gluklya) and Olga Egorova (Tsaplya) in 1995, has since its earliest works focused on the subject of things as projections of human existence. In their manifesto dialogue for the project Girlfriends (1995) Gluklya and Tsaplya stated: “We are friends, and as well as being soulmates what unites us is our shared interest in Things, and specifically, in their most human variety—Clothes.”

In FFC projects dresses literally spoke to the viewer and told them about the lives of their former owners. They reflected social traumas and fears, relieved themselves of their functionality, and became universal metaphors of human destiny. The duo diversified their work with clothes: they painted fabric and made it into dresses, gave a second life to found costumes, immortalising them by telling their tragic stories, sent them on journeys to dissolve their past in a new existence. 

Interpreted by FFC, an item of clothing would ultimately become a symbol of a character’s inner essence, whether that person was a worker, a retired senior, a diligent schoolgirl or a heartbroken teenager. The main demiurge of their performances and installations, however, was the high‑school student, their alter ego: a figure of romantic recklessness, purity and preparedness for Great Deeds. 

Gradually, their works became more socially oriented, yet their interest in textiles as symbols of life, and in the topic of the feminine, which represents supragender kindness, striving for justice, fragility coexisting with strength in friendship, remained.

Their video installation Scarlet Sails was inspired by Alexander Grin’s novel, whose protagonist Assol is able to cope with all the hardships of an unfair world due to her firm belief in the possibility of a fairy tale ending. The scarlet sails on the white ship of Arthur Gray confirm the reality of her utopian dream, bringing her happiness and peace.

In Gluklya and Tsaplya’s work, young girls do not rely on an impossible (or postponed) happiness, waiting for their prince by the sea. They are ready to create it themselves, sewing scarlet sails in the absence of a manly hero. Suddenly, senior ladies enter their workshop—they have spent years hoping to meet their savior, who will one day arrive from the imaginary. Their discordant choir tries to convince the girls to “believe in miracles,” singing a Soviet song from the Khrushchev Thaw era. Thus, the sober and decisive present meets the dreamy past, which can only wait for solutions to come from the outside. Their confrontation ends in a fight over the Scarlet Fabric, and the past, represented by the sad but persistent old ladies, wins. Grabbing the scarlet sails sewn by the hands of others, the ladies head for the sea, to sail away into the miraculous unknown. 

The ambiguity of the image created by Gluklya and Tsaplya made this one of their best‑known works. Some interpret it politically—red being the symbol of the revolution—although the nature of the revolution here is unclear, since the appropriation of the products of someone else’s labor multiplies the injustice and essentially represents capitalist theft. At the same time, scarlet is the color of Life itself and of the mother’s womb. In this case, the appropriation of the scarlet sail can be interpreted as an attempt to return to a child’s consciousness that is paralyzed in anticipation of a miracle.

Вадим Фишкин — мультидисциплинарный художник, исследующий взаимоотношения между искусственным и реальным. Свет, звук, проекции, тени становятся для Фишкина инструментами, с помощью которых он превращает технологии в ироничные и поэтичные метафоры, обостряющие восприятие повседневного.
Работа «Снеговик с красной звездой» была впервые представлена в 2002 году на совместной выставке с Гией Ригвавой «Словарь воображаемых мест» в галерее Škuc (Любляна). Произведение относится к циклу инсталляций «Объекты с фонариками», основанных на световых экспериментах. Три фонарика проецируют на стену три световых круга разных размеров: они расположены как снежные шары при лепке снеговика. Над ними — красная лазерная точка, завершающая композицию.

It becomes a metaphor for the repose of a functional object, which, having lost its role, is frozen in the eternity between life and death. Placed under glass, the dress looks like a museum piece or a child's  sekretik, a hiding place for memories of a carefree past. The relic, surrounded by artificial flowers, becomes an opposition to the girls’ white dresses soaring like angelic entities.

The vertical part of the installation is based on plastic oppositions—black and white, static and dynamic, heavy and light. In contrast there is a spatial horizontal—a row of bright vintage swimsuits reflected in a large mirror in a massive frame.

In the intersection of the material (horizontal, colored) and the sublime (vertical, monochrome) one can read not only the memory of the body, the experience of reality and liberation from it, but also the universal signs of the earthly and heavenly.

A composition compiled of numerous volleyball marks was on display at the gallery‑as if a bored player had repeatedly thrown the ball against the wall. Yet these round imprints were arranged into a carefully calibrated ensemble, subtly forming the structure of a painting. It was disguised as a fragment of reality, transported into the exhibition space. On the floor, the artists placed a dramatically lit pile of excrement‑apparently left by a dog that had been wandering nearby. In this way, the dogmatic realism of Soviet aesthetics was upheld, even though it appeared as a gesture of contemporary art. The format of the exhibition installation was a metaphor for the rejection of traditional artistic media in favor of the action‑based practices of the early 1990s.

Alexander Sigutin's project Hierarchy in Art ironically explored the universal competitive attitude of the milieu, where every artist dreams of standing above the rest, and every art historian is aiming to gain professional weight.
Sigutin invited artists to measure their height. The resulting table revealed the leaders in art: the tallest artist was from the Netherlands. Amusingly, a representative of Western art turned out to be above the locals. Later, Sigutin aggregated all the data and calculated the average height of a Moscow artist—167 cm.
For art oritios, curators, and art historians, he devised a different procedure to measure professional qualities. They were to be weighed to determine the degree of their art world gravitas. The leader was critic Andrei Kovalev. According to the results of measuring the art historical circle, the average weight was 66 kg.
The project also explored the audience for contemporary art, serving as a kind of sociological tool for understanding who takes an interest in such a peculiar practice. Visitors recorded their age‑ranging from schoolchildren to pen‑sioners—in another table.
Concluding the project, Sigutin created his own “chamber of measures and weights”: a wooden pole corresponding to the height of the average artist and a sack of potatoes equivalent to the weight of the average critic. The audience was represented by a cake with 28 candles marking the average age of visitors to the gallery in Tryokhprudny Lane.
In this way, Hierarchy in Art aimed to analyze the phenomenon that art historian Viktor Misiano called the “tusovka” — the main driving force behind the artistic process of the 1990s.

Korina painstakingly directs her constructed environment, creating the dramaturgy and systematically immersing the viewer in a surrealistic whirlwind of sensations and emotions. Her main working materials include cheap, everyday decorating textures, fabrics, tablecloths and oilcloths, plastic facing, siding, and polymeric foam. Loud, tasteless ornament and kitsch decoration play an important role. Korina’s installations are full of carnival craziness and the deliberate fancifulness of various aesthetics.

The installation Good Intentions was created for the main project of the 57th Venice Biennale (2017). The masterfully arranged space was an imitation of an urban environment with fences made of mesh and corrugated steel, and the facade fabrics with whimsical patterns seemed to conceal a ruined building. The improvised walls were covered with neon images and wreaths of artificial flowers. As an ironic researcher of post‑Soviet culture, Korina refers to Moscow’s streets, with their nighttime illumination and tasteless flower compositions. If in real life these simple decorations or, as the artist puts it, “rattles of an infantile aesthetic level,” are perceived as something ordinary and unimportant, within the space of the installation they create an anxious and even sinister atmosphere. Saturated with artificial light, the flower arrangements become funeral attributes, casting doubt on the “good intentions” of those who create an illusion of prosperity in a situation of increasing social inequality.

Solidarity 3D состоит из трех проекций, образующих трехмерную фигуру. Все выстроено вручную с точным соблюдением законов геометрии, оптики и перспективы: художник достигает эффекта светотени без цифрового вмешательства. Заложенная в названии лингвистическая игра — solid (твердый) и solidarity (солидарность) подчеркивает двойственность этих понятий. В то же время поэтическое равновесие, достигнутое в этом произведении, отражает магистральную тему произведений Фишкина — хрупкость природного и социального баланса.

Вадим Фишкин — мультидисциплинарный художник, архитектор по образованию. Он работает с проекциями, звуком, светом, тенью и другими сенсорными или интерактивными средствами, создавая инсталляции, в которых технологии обретают художественное измерение. 
Инсталляция Solidarity 3D была впервые представлена на персональной выставке Фишкина No Magic, прошедшей в 2015 году в Музее современного искусства (MSUM) в Любляне. Экспозиция строилась вокруг анализа механизмов восприятия и деконструкции зрительских ожиданий: художник обнажал механизмы формирования визуальной иллюзии.

Группа «Фабрика Найденных Одежд» (ФНО) основана в Санкт‑Петербурге в 1995 году Ольгой Егоровой (Цаплей) и Натальей Першиной‑Якиманской (Глюклей). ФНО принимала участие в программе Первого киберфеминистского Интернационала на выставке documenta X (Кассель, 1997), Интернациональном фестивале Балтийских стран (Хельсинки, 2000), Baltic Babel (Мальмё, 2003), Международном фестивале короткометражного фильма в Оберхаузене (2003, 2007, 2008, 2009). В 2009 году художницы стали лауреатами национальной премии «Черный квадрат» за фильм «Три матери и хор». ФНО прекратила свою деятельность в 2014 году.

Irina Korina was born in Moscow. She graduated from the Faculty of Stage Design at the Russian Academy of Theatrical Art (GITIS) and the Institute of Contemporary Art (Moscow), also studying at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. She took part in the 53rd (Russian Pavilion, 2009) and 57th Venice Biennale (main project, 2017). She is a recipient of the Innovation Prize in the nomination New Generation (2015).
