Charles Fréger: Empire
Fréger's series EMPIRE is a long‑term project (2004–2007) comprising portraits of a wide variety of elite troops across Europe, mostly Republican or Royal Guards. These sitters are dressed to be recognized as belonging to a specific set of codes, rules, role and institution — be it the military or sovereignty. Through the wearing of a uniform they perform the protocols, history, status and power of their unit, in ornate costumes that often defy practicality.
