Lietuvos žmonės / People of Lithuania

Antanas Sutkus had a great influence on the field of photography in Soviet times and is considered one of the greatest masters of photography. According to William. A. Ewing, Sutkus is a photographer of people, not things, although “things” revealing a rough order of life are always enough. He is extremely interested in what we often call “daily struggle” — how those who lives he meets his life on the road. Sutkus never hid behind the camera, the subjects he photographed often look directly at the lens. When this happens, we become like witnesses to silent interrogation. And — paradoxically — we are interrogated ourselves. Sutkus has a rare gift, characteristic of only a handful of photographers: he is able to blend smoothly, naturally with the environment.
