No More Bad Girls?
This stunning catalogue was created to accompany the international group exhibition No more bad girls?, a curatorial project which took place at Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Vienna, Austria, and toured to Stiftelsen 3,14 in Bergen, Norway, in 2010. Co‑edited by curators Claudia Marion Stemberger and Kathrin Becker, the publication was designed by Phil Samhaber and Sebastian Fischbeck.
This exhibition book confronts questions and pressures of white canonical feminism in artistic production and critical writing. Showcasing the rich diversity of womxn art, this publication situates the artists’ concerns of gender / sexuality and ethnicity / race within global aesthetic and discursive contexts.
The catalogue also features Becker’s contextual essay “Fresh Fruit for Some Old Western Views” / “Gedankenfutter für alte abendländische Ansichten”. Furthermore, in her essay “Productive Risk: Gender and Ethnicity as Contingent Categories” / “Produktives Risiko. Ethnizität und Gender als kontingente Kategorien”, Stemberger surveys German‑language art historiography, bringing to light previously neglected art histories of womxn artists.
Lavishly illustrated, the exhibition book contains numerous colour images by the participating womxn. Artists include Arahmaiani (Indonesia), Patty Chang (USA), Nezaket Ekici (Turkey/Germany), Judith Fegerl (Austria), Regina José Galindo (Guatemala), Chitra Ganesh (USA/India), Mathilde ter Heijne (Netherlands/Germany), Maryam Jafri (Pakistan/USA/Denmark), Agnes Janich (Poland), Nadia Khawaja (Pakistan), Elena Kovylina (Russia), Nomusa Makhubu (South Africa), Elodie Pong (Switzerland), Larissa Sansour (Palestine/Denmark/United Kingdom), Ene‑Liis Semper (Estonia), Andrea Sunder‑Plassmann (Germany), and Newsha Tavakolian (Iran).
