<h2>The Archive</h2>
<p>In 2018 Garage acquired one third of the archive left behind by the renowned Russian artist Vladislav Mamyshev‑Monroe (1969–2013). The other two parts belong to Moscow Museum of Modern Art and the Vladislav Mamyshev‑Monroe Foundation.</p>
<p>Garage Archive holdings include texts written by the artist, his letters, possessions, books, and a compilation of publications on the artist. Amongst the materials are the self‑published magazines Kh.V.Z (Khochu Vse Znat’, 1997) and M.V.U. (1994), texts written for Monroe’s first solo show Flora and Fauna. Painting &amp; Petting (with Bella Matveeva), full “profiles” of the characters impersonated by the artist, manuscripts and drafts for works of literature, preparatory sketches for installations, parts of stage costumes, and works by other artists given to him as gifts.</p>
<p>The Vladislav Mamyshev‑Monroe archive comprises biographical material that allows researchers to trace the career of the artist and study possible sources of his individual mythmaking.</p>
<h2>The Artist</h2>
<p>Vladislav Mamyshev‑Monroe (1969–2013) was a Russian artist and writer active in the 1990s and 2000s. His work includes dozens of photographic series and impersonations of famous historical and cultural figures. In 1990, together with Yuri Lesnik, Timur Novikov and Georgy Guryanov. he founded Pirate TV. Together with Sergei Bugaev (Afrika), Olesya Turkina, and Viktor Mazin he published the journal Kabinet. In 2004, Monroe was the presenter of “Rozovy blo” (Pink Section) on Artemy Troitsky’s TV show Priznaky zhizny (Signs of Life). He was awarded the Innovation Prize in 2014 and the Kandinsky Prize in 2007.</p>

Московская арт‑группа. Основана в декабре 1987 года Павлом Пепперштейном, Сергеем Ануфриевым и Юрием Лейдерманом — тремя «старшими инспекторами» группы. На раннем этапе существования в группе участвовал Антон Носик, предложивший её название. В 1991 году Лейдерман покинул группу, в качестве «старшего инспектора» к ней присоединился Владимир Фёдоров. До 1993 года в группу также входили «младшие инспектора», впоследствии — «Инспекционная Коллегия МГ». Andrei Monastyrsky was born in Petsamo (Pechenga, Murmansk Oblast). He graduated from the Philology Faculty of Moscow State University. He was a founder (1976), theorist, and author of large‑scale actions in the group Collective Actions. He took part in the Biennale of Dissent (Venice, 1977), the 50th (main project, 2003), 52nd (main project, 2007) and 54th Venice Biennale (Russian Pavilion, 2011) and also documenta 12 (Kassel, 2007). He is a recipient of the Andrei Bely Prize for his important contribution to the development of Russian literature (2003) and the Innovation Prize in the nominations Theory, Criticism, Art History (2010) and For Creative Contribution to the Development of Contemporary Art (2015).

Collective Actions was founded in 1976 in Moscow. The initial group comprised Nikita Alexeev (until 1980), George Kiesewalter, Andrei Monastyrsky, Nikolai Panitkov and Lev Rubinstein. In 1979 Sergei Romashko, Elena Elagina, Igor Makarevich joined the group, followed by Sabina Hänsgen in 1985. The group took part in the Biennale of Dissent (Venice, 1977) and exhibited in the Russian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale (2011).

Collective Actions

Erik Bulatov was born in 1933 in Sverdlovsk. He attended the art studio at the Moscow House of Pioneers and studied at Moscow Middle Art School and then at the Moscow Surikov State Art Institute. From 1959, he worked at the Detgiz publishing house with Ilya Kabakov and Oleg Vassiliev. He has participated in numerous exhibitions, including the Biennale of Dissent (Venice, 1977) and the 43rd and 50th Venice Biennale (1988, 2003). He is a recipient of the Innovation Prize in the nomination For Creative Contribution to the Development of Contemporary Art (2012).
