The Hasselblad Awards, 1980–1995
Victor Hasselblad founded a camera factory in Göteborg, Sweden, in 1941 and was the inventor of a camera which has since become world famous. He and his wife, Erna, bequeathed their entire fortune to a foundation to promote scientific research and education in the natural sciences and photography. The Foundation has provided grants for a wide range of projects over the years and also presents an international photography prize, the Hasselblad Award, every year to an outstanding photographer.
The Hasselblad Foundation opened the Hasselblad Photographic Center in Göteborg in the autumn of 1989. The Center maintains an ongoing program of seminars, lectures and exhibitions, both in Göteborg and elsewhere. This book was published to celebrate the opening, in January 1996, of the Hasselblad Center's new gallery, adjoining the Göteborg Museum of Art, and contains a selection from the Center's collection of photographs be Hasselblad Award‑winners, together with as essays on each photographer.
