Thomas Joshua Cooper: Dreaming the Gokstadt
'Dreaming the Gokstadt' is the second in a proposed cycle of five books by the artist. The first, 'Between Dark and Dark', was published by Graeme Murray, Edinburgh in 1985. The Gokstadt ship is a 1000 year old viking ship found buried in a peat bog near the village of Gokstadt, Norway after which it was named. It was excavated and restored, and is now in the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. The ship and its memory became the central focus of the entire four years work that make up this project.
This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition 'Dreaming the Gokstadt, Northern Lands and Islands', which was held at Serpentine South Gallery, London from 26 November 1988 to 8 January 1989.
