El Lissitzky
El Lissizky (1890–1941), one of the leading artists of the European and Russian avant-garde, worked across various fields: painting, drawing, architecture, printing, design, photography and theoretical writing. He did not focus on any one sphere, considering himself a universal artist-inventor. For Lissitzky, the terms experiment and invention were key. The Dutch architect Mart Stam wrote: “Lissitzky was a true enthusiast, full of ideas and interested in everything that could lead to a creatively transformed world for future generation”. He utilised the foremost achievements of contemporary culture, keemly following every innovation in painting, book design and photography, and using there numerous collective exploratrions to create novel formulas which would open up new directions and possibilities.
