The Fifth Garage Art Book Fair and the Tenth Vkus Bumagi Market of Hand and Small-Edition Printing reunite to create on Garage Square in front of the Museum a large space for experimentations with what would seem to be the most conservative medium today, the book, as well as with auteur graphics.

Garage Art Book Fair and the Vkus Bumagi Market leave the Museum’s walls to become a city festival that will bring together independent book publishers and experimental editors, small press, graphic artists and galleries, samizdat and zines.

Image and text are the two basic elements that form a book. Over the 500-year history of book-making, illustration has ceased to be purely applied, becoming an independent artistic and everyday practice. Book artists are constantly inventing something new, keenly responding to any changes, and trying to address critical topics using visual means.

In the hands of the avant-garde artists, the text acquired a visual character: letters jumped across the pages, sentences gathered into pictures or scattered into abstraction… This is how the usual boundaries of publishing formats are blurred, making our perception of the book more complicated. To read or to watch? A literary piece or an art object? Subculture or an important social phenomenon? Samizdat or small press? An artist’s book, zine, or magazine?

Combining different modes of art production and various publishing practices, Garage Art Book Fair participants will set up an interdisciplinary space of experiment and dialogue.

The book festival welcomes publishers, artists, illustrators, small press, galleries, and other experimenters to take part.
