Garage Museum of Contemporary Art’s program for seniors

Creating the experience of interaction between the Museum and visitors has always been an important part of Garage’s overall development and its educational programming. During self-isolation, the Museum team maintained a connection with the audience, including our senior visitors. This experience led to the establishment of a special platform for people in the third age, allowing them to remain aware of cultural events and continue communicating within an environment of co-thinkers.

Garage’s debut special program for senior visitors launched in 2017,  later being named A Tour Around a Contemporary Museum. It was aimed at introducing the audience to the phenomenon of contemporary art and the nuances of the Museum’s performance based on the example of Garage’s own exhibition projects. Participants of the course were able to plunge into the work of a contemporary museum by getting acquainted with exhibition-making and acquiring new knowledge in the field of art history and culture.

Deprived of the option to physically visit cultural institutions due to self-isolation, many people began exploring international online projects. Taking into account the program participants’ need for communication, Garage has launched a platform that brings together recordings and broadcasts of events held at the Museum and in theaters, materials on books and films, podcasts, and many other things. Every user can choose themes that interest them and engage in a discussion within the community.

In fall, the program will be supplemented with announcements of events at Garage—including tours, interaction with exhibition curators, thematic reading groups, role-playing training and games, lectures from guest experts on the history of art and culture, and masterclasses with young artists and the Museum’s pedagogues.
