DESCRIPTION

Dmitry Markov is one of the best-known Russian documentary photographers.

His practice is closely connected to working with communities, and the subjects of his photographs are often people from various groups that are subject to discrimination. Dmitry does not see the point in making art if it is not of use to society.

At the center of this meeting are the links between art and volunteering, the ethics of working with vulnerable groups, and the question of whether social change can be effected through art.

ABOUT THE TUTOR

Dmitry Markov

(b. 1982, Pushkino) is a documentary photographer. He is known for taking photographs on an iPhone which create an image of “provincial Russia.” His interest in the provinces and their inhabitants came from his volunteer work in a children’s psychoneurological institution (PNI). Later he began working for a charity, and for around five years combined his photography career with social work with teenage former residents of PNIs. In 2012, Markov created an account on Instagram where he published his photographs, and in 2015 he became one of three photographers who received a joint grant from Getty Images and Instagram. In 2016, he was the first Russian participant in the campaign Shot on iPhone. He has published two photography books, #Notebook (2018) and Russia Squared (2021). He lives and works in Pskov.
