DESCRIPTION

Alexander Verevkin, organizer of the publishing house Plato Togliatti, will share his experience of making zines and present some of the zines he has published.

The lecture will focus on Togliatti literary and art samizdat and the connections between the Togliatti samizdat underground and other samizdat scenes in Russia, the USA, and Europe that developed in the 2000s. It will also cover self-publishing as an artistic strategy, the specificity of artist-founded zine publishers, and the importance of zines as an art form in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

THE PARTICIPANT

Alexander Verevkin

(b. 1977, Togliatti) is an artist, poet, and musician. In 1997, he founded a publishing house for the production and distribution of independent publications. In 2018, he named it Plato Togliatti and under that name released over 130 publications of 20 to 100 copies. Plato Togliatti specialises in the little-studied Togliatti underground art and poetry scenes of the 1990s and early 2000s and works with contemporary artists from Russia, Europe, the UK, and the USA. Alexander Verevkin lives and works in Togliatti.
