DESCRIPTION

The project Single Copy was initiated by Garage in 2017, its aim to contribute to the rare genre of the artist’s book—a unique synthesis of text and illustration made by artist and prepared in the form a book, then published in a limited edition.

For six months from October 2017 through March 2018, Russian artists Uliana Podkorytova, Vladislav Kruchinky, and Olga Deryugina worked on preparing artist’s books commissioned by Garage Library. Their works are now on view in Garage Library through the end of May 2018. During the presentation, the artists who participated in the project will meet with the public to demonstrate results of their work, talk about the books they made, and answer questions. The artists books will go into the Museum’s collection.

The book by Vladislav Kruchinsky is an illustrated monologue of an imaginary scientist, stylized in the form of a never-ending acknowledgement chapter, that usually opens academic publications and exhibition catalogues.

Olga Deruygina has created a book that presents the results of research on the phenomenon of safety—how the concept of safety has changed throughout the last century and a half and what shapes our everyday life.

A comic strip book by Uliana Podkorytova narrates the life of Gertrude Savage, a character imagined by the artist herself.

The presentation will be moderated by Valery Ledenev, Garage chief librarian.
