The film tells the story of the Dunkirk evacuation—the WWII operation that saved over 300,000 British, Belgian, French and Canadian soldiers that were cut off and surrounded by the German army on the northern coast of France.
Christopher Nolan’s script for his first war drama is based on many historical sources. Despite the change of genre, Nolan shot the film with many of the crew who worked on his previous films: Hoyte van Hoytema (director of cinematography, Interstellar) and Hans Zimmer (composer, Inception, Interstellar). The film cast includes Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy (both also starred in Inception) and Kenneth Branagh.
