DESCRIPTION

Curators and art historians will sit and discuss the recent Vladivostok group exhibition, featuring contemporary artists from the Primorye region. The discussion at Garage coincides with the presentation of the exhibition catalogue.

The Region of Rebels exhibition, held at Vladivostok's Zarya Center for Contemporary Art from November 14, 2015 to February 23, 2016, embraced the works of 23 artists little known beyond the borders of the Primorye region. The accompanying publication allows for their work to be presented to a wider audience. Confined due to certain social and economic factors within the framework of the so-called “zonal exhibition” (a term dating back to Soviet times), today these artists find themselves at a crossroads. In short, the artists can choose either to bridge the provincial art scene, or to continue working within it. The curators of the show, together with the catalogue contributors, will discuss the possible approaches to the art of a particular area, and how the life of an artwork, conceived in a specific context, can develop outside of the environment it comes from.
