The Art Film Festival will host the premiere of Out of the Picture from the program AMFEST ART& ARTISTS.
A vanishing profession: art criticism in a world of a changing relationship between art and media.
Out of the Picture is the first documentary to focus on art criticism in the United States; the crisis of the profession and its new role in a world where the relationship between art and the media has dramatically changed.
Made over a period of more than ten years, the film focuses on critics and art historians who help audiences navigate the rapidly changing art agenda: senior art columnist for New York Magazine and Pulitzer Prize winner Jerry Saltz; Hrag Vartanian (Hyperallergic), Carolina Miranda (ARTnews, Los Angeles Times), independent writer Seth Rodney, and many others. According to its creators, the film was originally conceived as documentation of the fading interest in American art criticism, but turned into the discovery of a new generation of talented people who have redefined the work of the art critic and are creating a future for the complex system of contemporary art.
Out of the Picture invites the viewer to a engage in a dialogue about the nature of art, the contemporary art scene, and the creation of meaning in the twenty-first century. It will be of particular interest to art and art management students, as well as to journalists and art bloggers.
The film will be screened in English with Russian subtitles.
