Makino Takashi’s film takes the viewer on an epic multi-layered journey to remind us that “we too reside among the stars.”
Experimenting with the number of frames per second and multiple exposure, which allows him to layer up to 200 images at once, Makino Takashi manipulates footage of snow, leaves, and the city until they are no longer recognizable in the swarms of vibrating particles and shimmering clouds of light. Conceived as a reminder to “remember the stars,” the film by the Japanese video artist explores the beginnings of all phenomena in the shapeless universal field of primary matter—the beginnings that are not too different from the birth of stars and planets in the vortexes of space dust.
Makino Takashi (b. 1978) has shown his films at MoMA PS1 (New York), Whitechapel Gallery (London), International Film Festival Rotterdam and documenta 14 (Athens, 2017). In 2017, Takashi was awarded a MIEFF prize for his film On Generation and Corruption.
The film will be introduced by Makino Takashi.
The premiere is organised with the support of the Japan Foundation in Moscow.
