New Media Art Lab as a part of Garage Museum program at EXPO-2017

DESCRIPTION

Garage Museum of Contemporary Art announces an open call for participation in New Media Art Lab at EXPO-2017, Astana. The Lab will offer artists insight into media technologies and their use in contemporary art.

In summer 2017, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art will be presenting its exhibition and public programs at the International Specialized Exhibition Astana EXPO–2017. They will include an international conference on Kazakhstan’s modernist architecture curated by Anna Bronovitskaya, an exhibition of photographs of modernist buildings by Yuri Palmin, a series of master classes for children, lectures and film screenings.

Russian artists Sergey Kasich, Valia Fetisov and Dmitry ::vtol:: Morozov will run workshops on sound art, web technology, and robotics, and will help participants to apply these technologies to their own work.

THE WORKSHOPS

Sergey Kasich Workshop

Sergey Kasich will discuss musical interfaces for live electronic music performances, hyperinstruments, interactive and generative sound and multimedia software, multichannel and surround sound.


Valia Fetisov Workshop

Valia Fetisov will run the following sessions: “Bots and Chatbots  as Automized Software on the Web,” “Microcontrollers and Devices, Connected to the Web, the Internet of Things,” “Non-standard Interfaces on the Web,” “3D in the Browser,” and “Introduction to Neural Networks.”


Dmitry ::vtol:: Morozov Workshop

Participants in Dmitry Morozov’s workshop will collaborate on the construction of a small robotic sound instrument which detects uneven surfaces of small-scale objects and generates sound as a result.

ABOUT THE PARTICIPANTS

Sergey Kasich is an artist working in the field of experimental electronic music, performance art, sound art, and interactive installation art. He has organized numerous festivals of experimental electronic music and new media art. He is the co-founder and curator of communities such as Love Live Electronic (2008–2011) and SoundArtist.ru (2011– ). Since 2014 he has worked as a composer and sound designer for theater. Kasich’s work has been shown at festivals such as Geometry of Now (Moscow, 2017), Artbat Fest (Almaty, 2016), Ars Electronica (Linz, 2015), and CTM (Berlin, 2014).

Valia Fetisov is an artist whose practices combines social psychology and media technologies. He constructs artificial situations and creates conditions that influence human behaviour. He teaches at the Rodchenko Moscow School of Photography and Multimedia. His works have been shown in Russia and abroad, including Moscow Museum of Modern Art (2017); Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2016); ZKM I Center For Art and Media, Karlsruhe (2016); City of Paris Museum of Modern Art (2016); 8th Momentum Nordic Biennial of Contemporary Art, Moss (2015); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2014); and Sharjah Biennial 11 (2013).

Dmitry Morozov is a multimedia artist who works with robotics, sound, and science art. He designs and builds experimental musical instruments and modular synthesizers. He leads workshops and gives lectures on technology and art. He participated in the main program of the 4th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (2011). He has been awarded the Cube Art Prize (France, 2014), an honorable mention at the VIDA 16.0 Awards (Spain, 2014), and a prize at Ars Electronica (Austria, 2015).

how to take part

Garage invites Kazakhstan-based artists to participate in the New Media Lab.

All applications must be submitted to lab.expo@garagemca.org. Please enclose a completed application form, a letter of introduction (maximum 2,000 characters), and a portfolio in PDF format (maximum file size 15MB).

The deadline for applications is May 28, 2017. Travel expenses for those travelling to Astana from within Kazakhstan and accommodation costs will be covered. The language of instruction is Russian.
