Pavel Grishin is equably comfortable with prints, book illustration, painting, ceramics, and installations, switching between media and methods based on his creative needs. But it hasn’t always been that way.
This freedom is the result developing trust in himself and what is happening and rejecting the strict reduction of creative impulses. «There is no point focusing on something. Everything simply is. All of my interests have value, ” states Pavel. At the meeting at Garage the artist will talk about how personal circumstances that might initially be seen as a hindrance to self-realization can generate useful discoveries. For example, a trip during the pandemic to the island of Gran Canaria, which involved switching off from his usual frantic rhythm, awoke in Pavel an earlier sensitivity to architectural surfaces that had been learned when training as a monumental artist, and suggested a new direction for painterly language. This is how the series Island appeared. The artist will also share how in the past three years he has got rid of the false idea that there is a single «miracle medium» that will provide definition in the artist’s life and make them happy.
