Mauro Restiffe Moscow Visit

DESCRIPTION

São Paulo based artist Mauro Restiffe was in Moscow for the third time in March

São Paulo based artist Mauro Restiffe was in Moscow for the third time in March, after his first visit to Russia back in 1994. He returned to the country upon invitation from Garage to create a series of photographs chronicling the city and its life through his sensitive and penetrating eye. Restiffe’s large-scale black and white photographs, executed with the same Leica camera for the past 20 years, transpire a keen interest in modernist buildings and interiors where people, artworks, and landscapes interplay.

During his two most recent trips, the artist has been captivated by the renovation of the new Garage building, originally erected in 1968. Incorporating its spirit into the many existing paradoxical “time capsules” within Moscow, the attention in his photographs swings between everyday life, people, and buildings that retain the magic of an “indecipherable” time. Restiffe also went back to St. Petersburg, where he lived twenty years ago, in an emotional rediscovery of a much loved city.
