A mask can reveal and underline personality traits or even help communicate with the spirits of nature if you’re an ancient shaman. It can also conceal your identity if you’re a hero or help you transform into anyone you like.
Masha describes her project as follows: “I first started working with textile masks several years ago, when I was making objects using embroidery and appliqué. I like the fact that these works can be a kind of portal into a dreamlike space, where the destination is entirely dependent on the wearer. And if embroidery forms a ‘scar’ on the fabric, appliqué is the fabric itself, reorganized and reconceptualized.”
A mask enables us not just to hide from reality but also to be involved in it in a new role. During the masterclass, participants will work with the artist to design and make masks from various fabrics using the appliqué technique.
