Made in Russia 3: Premiere and Q&A

DESCRIPTION

The third program of the shnit Worldwide Shortfilmfestival 2020 national competition features Russian shorts of very different genres and styles, including a dialogue-heavy horror (Lana Vlady), a courtroom thriller (Anastasia Borisova), and an erotic animation (Varya Yakovleva). The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the makers of the shorts.

Sulphur

In the city of Norilsk, too polluted to live in, a woman murders and dismembers her husband. A detective from Moscow tries to find out the truth in an adaptation of Dmitry Glukhovsky’s short story that has already won the short film competition at Kinotavr 2020.

Consolation

At night, Katya orders taxis, flirts with drivers and has sex with them. Many want to meet again, but Katya avoids relationships. Everything changes when one of the drivers decides to follow her, in a story of romance that brings to mind Erika Kohut from Michael Haneke’s The Piano Teacher.

Anna, Cat-and-Mouse

Over breakfast, Anna sees a naked man lustfully staring at her from the window. Soon, he will start trying to break in, but Anna is not afraid—she is up for playing cat and mouse. The paper animation about the power women have over men features imagery inspired by the cubist works by Pablo Picasso.

Sulus

Tuyara is fighting for custody over her son Sulus. Exhausted by the divorce, she conspires with her lawyer to kidnap the child. However, Sulus’s father is a cop, and the courtroom drama slowly grows into a thriller.

Polina is an administrator and Nadya is a cleaner in the Anna Kern Hotel on the Finnish border. Few guests spend more than a night at the hotel, but one day a good-looking man comes to stay… Dreams are mixed with real-life events and quotes from Attenberg by Athina Rachel Tsangari in the eccentric film scored by the French collective La Femme.
