The М83 show will be centered around the band’s latest album Junk, released this spring as well as featuring the greatest hits of their fifteen-year career.
The primary inspiration for Junk—which the band has worked on for five years—comes from musical nostalgia for the 1970s and the 1980s. Critics have called Junk the music equivalent of the iconic 1985 movie Back to the Future, while Gonzalez admitted referencing popular American TV shows of the 1980s, saying ‘I wanted to make what I call an ‘organized mess’—a collection of songs that aren’t made to live with each other, yet somehow work together.’ For many critics this strategy seemed ‘a suffocating retromania’, while some saw the integrity of style and ‘undiscovered methods of researching the past’. Special praise was given for the albums vocals which featured guest artists such as Beck, Mai Lan, and Susanne Sundfør.
