In the past few decades, a number of synagogues have appeared in various German cities that have become a noteworthy phenomenon in contemporary architecture. The Jewish communities of Mainz, Dresden, Munich, Ulm, etc. have received new buildings of cutting-edge design,  combining the functions of religious and social centers.

In his lecture at Garage, Manuel Herz, the architect of the newly built synagogue in Mainz, will discuss the history and the role of such institutions in society, as well as the possible political powers behind their appearance in the urban environment. He will also touch upon the recent revival of the Jewish culture in Germany after the Holocaust. The lecture is in German, with translation into Russian.

Manuel Herz (b. 1969) is the founding head of ‘Manuel Herz Architects’ office for architecture and urban planning, based in Basel and Cologne, a researcher, and a university professor. Along with the Mainz Jewish Community Center, his acclaimed projects include a residential building in Ordos, China, a museum extension in Ashdod, Israel (with Eyal Weizman and Rafi Segal), and a multifunctional space ‘Legal / Illegal’ in Cologne, which was exhibited at the 2004 Venice Architecture Biennale.

Organized with the support of the Goethe Institute in Moscow and the cultural and educational project Eshkolot
