Lecture and Writing Masterclass by Artist Lena Skripkina: The Phenomenology of the Dark Forest in Twentieth-Century Art

DESCRIPTION

This event explores forest landscapes in the art of the twentieth century and the birth of an “other” type of consciousness. As Dante put it, “I found myself within a forest dark / For the straightforward pathway had been lost.”

The image of the forest has an element of paradise lost, knightly adventures, and the flickering light of Favorsky. The artist will look at the forest as the border of the sacred in nature and in art and explain how these outlines influence vision and thought. With the help of the books The Forest by Vladimir Bibikhin, The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro, and The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben, participants will immerse themselves in a sacred world.

In the second part of the meeting, participants will be asked to create a personal diary of observations about the forest, having listened to works by Debussy and Wagner.
