Jean Tinguely — Roman Signer

Garage Education Center

The Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguely (1925–1991) is best known for his mechanical, kinetic sculptures, such as Stravinsky Fountain. Located in the square of Igor Stravinsky behind the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, it consists of 16 moving sculptures scattered around the fountain. Sometimes frightening, sometimes amusing, his Dada-inspired works satirize over-production in the modern age.

Swiss sculptor Roman Signer (b. 1938) started working in the 1970s. In 1999 he represented Switzerland at the Venice Biennale, and he is familiar to Russian audiences due to his participation in the Third Moscow Biennale. He is known for his ability to transform everyday objects, such as tables, shoes, bicycles, umbrellas, into unusual things, tearing them from their familiar context.

Entrance is free, but space is limited. Please arrive early.

Irina Kulik PhD (b. 1970) is an art critic, cultural studies expert, lecturer at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) Moscow, and the author of numerous publications on contemporary art, cinema, and modern music.
