Hovering Identity: A Meeting with the Artist Dima Filippov

Date

Schedule

19:30

Place

West Gallery

DESCRIPTION

Dima Filippov is a rare combination of artist-maker and artist-thinker.

As an artist-thinker, since 2012 he has run Elektrozavod Gallery, which is built on the principle of artists’ self-organization, and has brought a number of artists to light. As an artist-transformer, since 2009 he has been making installations and drawings, photographs and videos and working with the theme of identity. However, for him this theme is rooted not in nationality or in being part of a specific cultural code but in the landscape. And in Filippov’s case, it is made up of the geography, the economic map, and the institutional network of cultural production. The discussion at Garage will explore how the connections, transitions, and counterpoints between these semantic fields are formed and at which moments the artist prefers to take the side of institutional critique or to hover in the pre-artistic space of free drawing. It will be based on an analysis of works since 2009 and will include the showing of videos from the artist’s personal archive.
