Grammar of Freedom / Five Lessons Works from Arteast 2000+ Collection Public ProgramGrammar of Freedom / Five Lessons Works from Arteast 2000+ Collection Public Program

The education program that accompanies the exhibition is inspired by the role of the Arteast 2000+ Collection as a powerful tool for understanding the conditions of art production, as well as its historicization and distribution in a region defined by a shared socialist context.

The program includes a panel discussion, an international conference, an audio guide, guided tours, and children’s activities.

Audio guide
Free with the purchase of an admission ticket; available from Garage Information Desk

For those who prefer to seek some professional perspectives on the show as they experience it, Garage has prepared an extensive audio guide. This one-hour program will provide information on some of the key works in the exhibition and the Arteast 2000+ Collection. The guide has been prepared in collaboration with the Education Department of Moderna galerija in Ljubljana.

Friday, February 6

19:30–21:00  Garage Education Center and Library

Panel discussion United Through Adversity

The current political climate has had a growing impact on artistic and institutional freedoms. In this situation it is important that art practitioners from Eastern Europe and Russia, drawing on accumulated experience from our shared socialist past, work together to examine the common «enemies» we share today. Are there new models and strategies of cultural production, collective work, and collaboration that we can recognize as effective? Expanding on one of the «lessons» from the exhibition, The potential for uniting through adversity, the curators, together with some of the participant artists, will share their perspectives.

Participants: Zdenka Badovinac, Luchezar Boyadjiev, Anatoly Osmolovsky, Darinka Pop-Mitić, Bojana Piškur, Igor Španjol, Olga Egorova, Borut Vogelnik, Roman Uranjek

Moderator: Snejana Krasteva

Admission is free

Garage 3rd International Conference

For fifteen years, the Arteast 2000+ Collection has provided an opportunity to explore how art from former socialist countries has signaled new models of historisization, re-examining the potential for cultural production in socially and politically charged environments. Continuing the need for critical reassessment and expanding the perspective to an international context, this one-day conference will revisit unique regional histories since 1989 in light of the recent return to Cold War rhetoric. Through lectures and panel discussions, speakers will explore the possibilities for original readings of the lessons that art contributes to our understanding of real world situations and vice versa.

Speakers: Zdenka Badovinac, Anthony Gardner, Boris Groys, Rastko Močnik, and Alexei Yurchak, among others
