On September 21, Garage will run the one-day festival Garage to 18 for children, teenagers, and their parents. The program includes lectures, workshops, and mediation sessions for the project Open Storage. A Prologue.

The kids’ program for Open Storage. A Prologue will be presented at the festival. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the tutors and choose the fall education course that is right for them.

how to take part

Free admission with advance registration. 

Festival events are accessible to visitors with disabilities. Tutors with knowledge of Russian Sign Language will be working at the festival to assist deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors.

Family Lectures: Why Does Art Need a Home?

This is the first lecture in the series A Home for Art, which will run in October and focus on the origins of museums and collections. Katya Sinitsina explores how museums came into being and why we need them.

About the Tutor

Katya Sinitsina is an independent curator, artist, and art historian. She studies the art of the Russian avant-garde.

Workshop: Imaginary Collection

Together with the tutor of the new kids’ course Collecting, which begins in October, participants will discuss why museums, galleries, and collectors create catalogues of their collections and learn how these publications are organized. In the practical part of the workshop, participants will create catalogue zines for their imaginary collections.

About the Tutor

Sonya Tkacheva is an art historian who runs workshops for children and is the organizer and moderator of a book club for teenagers.

Workshop: Atelier of Connections

Atelier of Connections participants will work with the tutor to devise their own fairy tale and then weave it on a loom.

Masterclass with Artist Misha Le Jen

Participants will learn what art actions are and, together with artist Misha Le Jen, will present their own interpretations of his work A Picture Painted with the Heart (1993).

Working in teams of three, participants will listen to the beating of their partner’s heart through a stethoscope and create vibrations moving a pendulum with paint suspended above the canvas or be responsible for the vibrations of the canvas. By combining different impulses each group will create their own painting.

Participants can take their works with them and the workshop is primarily aimed at a family audience.

Misha Le Jen is an action artist who has participated in exhibitions in Russia and abroad.

Family Mediation Sessions for the project Open Storage. A Prologue

Together with mediators Polina Fesan and Anastasia Tikhonova, parents and children will visit the project Open Storage. A Prologue, discuss the works in the project, and learn more about Garage Collection.

Garage Readings with Educator and Russian Sign Language Teacher Ksenia Kolosova

Ksenia will read the book The Log Opens a Museum in Russian Sign Language with interpretation into Russian. The reading will be followed by a creative session where participants will make storage boxes for their future collections.

About the Tutor

Ksenia Kolosova is a deaf educator, interior designer, and teacher of Russian Sign Language. Since 2018, she has been running creative workshops at Garage. She created the design for the museum of the National Society of the Deaf at the Society’s central office, as well as many other interior design projects.

Screening of the Animation My Life as a Courgette and Discussion with Valentina Okunkova, Tutor of the Film Criticism Workshop

Participants will watch the animated film My Life as a Courgette and learn about the film criticism workshop for teenagers How to Watch Films and Tell People About Them. The screening will be followed by a discussion of the film with the workshop tutor Valentina Okunkova, where participants will play the role of film critics.

The film will be screened in Russian with Russian subtitles. The screening will be accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers.

Valentina Okunkova is a theater historian, children’s Reggio teacher, and inclusive programs tutor at Garage.

Meeting with a Registrar: What is Art Made of?

Participants will learn what registrars do at Garage and why museums store art. They will visit the project Open Storage. A Prologue and talk about what the artworks on display are made of.
