DESCRIPTION

Ruben Östlund’s satirical drama about loss of privilege. Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

Östlund’s two-part phantasmagoria begins with a casting scene. Half-naked male models are waiting to audition and give a jokey interview. The journalist asks them to strike a pose for a mass market ad—to smile and depict happiness despite poverty—and for an expensive ad—to demonstrate a cold, arrogant facial expression. One of the models, Carl, is told by the casting director that he needs to smooth his «triangle of sadness, ” the lines on his brow that are a result of strong emotions and personal experience. Yaya, his girlfriend is a successful model and influencer. She thinks Carl’s conversations about gender and financial equality in the relationship are not sexy and dreams of being a trophy wife. They go on a cruise together, invited for free in return for Yaya promoting it on social media. The yacht is full of rich people: a nouveau riche Russian with several women, one may be his wife and one his lover, a sweet British pensioner couple who have made money selling arms, and lonely start-uppers. The trip is in the hands of a heavy drinking captain and communist played by Woody Harrelson and a crew manager who is obsessed with ideal service. On the evening of the captain’s dinner there is a terrible storm that will change the lives of travelers and crew forever.

Östlund’s cinematic journey began with intimate critical stories on the scale of a single family (Force Majeure) and of Swedish society (Play, which is centered around a conflict between migrant children and those from Swedish families). In The Square, which won the Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, the director made more direct use of satire to dissect the system of contemporary art. Triangle of Sadness, which premiered with acclaim at Cannes and won the Palme d’Or, is an extreme in terms of scale and of bold cinematic language. It covers the major themes of class stratification and poverty, gender and racial stereotypes, and beauty as currency in the form of an absurdist comedy drama, transforming the circus act on the screen into a filigree copy of reality. Public discussion of feminism sits alongside courses for future wives of rich men, and major philanthropists make money producing dangerous medicines or weapons. Triangle of Sadness becomes the essence of the contradictions of the contemporary world.

Fredrik Wenzel, the cinematographer on Östlund’s last two films, creates a striking and harsh picture reminiscent of the work of British photographer Martin Parr, who shot satirical portraits of people from various social strata. He underlines the corporeality of the characters and the contrast between their less-than-ideal bodies and their ideal outfits, but this difference will be erased, like their privileges and social roles, when everyone, rich people and staff, is faced with a fight for survival.

The film will be screened in English with Russian subtitles.
