Metaphorical story about a Red Army soldier who is trying to cope with the horrors of the past and find himself a peaceful life and love. However his barely found harmony is threatened by the new State order. This directorial debut by Alexander Sokurov and screenwriter Yuriy Arabov, remarkably was not destroyed by Soviet censors and was shelved for nearly a decade.
