DESCRIPTION

The winner of the 71st Cannes Film Festival is a deceptively simple drama about crisis of the traditional family and blood ties as a relative concept which has nothing to do with authentic intimacy, love and care.

Poverty-stricken father and son steal food from supermarkets to feed their family. At home, mother, grandmother, teenage sister, and a girl they once found freezing in the street, are waiting for them. Conflict between helpless people and the system brings up the question of whether the modern world is humane enough if horizontal connections are the only guarantee of love, harmony, and dignity. This piercing and imponderable film by the Japanese classic director carries on and at the same time revises the traditions of his great predecessor Yasujiro Ozu.

The film will be shown in Japanese with Russian subtitles.
