Jessica, an orchid grower, is haunted by a strange sound that could be either explosions or kicks, making her anxious and resulting in insomnia.
Trying to detect the origin of the sound, she discovers another reality beyond sleep and wakefulness, life and death. A new film by Thailand’s Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Memoria is a journey into the invisible world that we can only hear.
Florist Jessica comes to Colombia to take care of her sister, who is in a state of constant sleep. Jessica becomes herself haunted by a sound of unknown origin that prevents her from sleeping. In search of the source, she embarks on a journey that will take her beyond the boundaries of her usual reality.
Having made a movie for the first time outside his native Thailand, in a foreign language, and starring a leading actress, Apichatpong Weerasethakul does not betray his signature magical contemplation, nonlinear narrative, dreamy clarity, tangled reality that envelops his sleepless protagonists and viewers. And of course the jungle, always and everywhere mysterious, erasing the usual self, yet creating a strange and extraordinarily intense feeling of home. Memoria premiered internationally at the 74th Cannes Film Festival (2021).
The film will be screened in Spanish and English with Russian subtitles.
